What is a Split Air Conditioner? Split vs Packaged AC Units
A split air conditioner is composed of two separate units, a condensing unit and an evaporative coil (known as a "condenser," and a "coil" respectively in shorthand or slang). It is from these two separate units that a split air conditioner gets its name. These units are joined by a set of copper tubing known as a "lineset," which transfers refrigerant from one unit to another.
